Howard W. Maxwell was an engineer who owned and operated Maxwell Limited, a foundry originally located in Paris, Ontario in the 1800s, and eventually moved to St. Marys, Ontario around the turn of the century. At the beginning of his career, his business manufactured farm equipment but diversified over the years, producing lawn mowers, ringer washing machines, and even munitions during World War II.

Maxwelton Braes is the name H. W. Maxwell gave to a piece of property he purchased in the St. Marys area. Built to be his own fishing resort where only fly fishing was allowed (his rules), Maxwelton Braes became a special place for the family to go to for four generations. The property was sold in 2008 by Betty Ross (née Maxwell).

The photos in this gallery were commissioned by Tina Crosby, the wife of H. W. Maxwell’s great grandson, J. D. Ross, before the property was sold. Like the tree that was planted at Maxwelton Braes in honour of J. D.’s sister, Mel, these images were created to provide a lasting memory for Howard W. Maxwell’s family and loved ones.
